Long ago, Schöne Erde Manor stood proud with the mountains at her back and the valley spread before her. Her doors were opened to friends, family, and strangers. There was always a place at her hearth for food, drink and conversation. There was always a place for sleep and other things in her bedrooms.
She had enemies though, enemies that would see her fall under the weight of war and violence. But she was in the center of the Germanic tribes, and with their help, those who lived and defended her were able to repel all those who would seek to harm her.
But then Roman Empire fell, and the Germanic forces headed off for better spoils and treasure. Those that were left behind did what they could to defend Schöne from those who sought out power, dominance, and control. They were able to eke out an existence. It was not always peaceful, but Schöne was able to survive.
Then a terrible tragedy occurred. Schöne was attacked by unknown invaders from the valley before her and from those mountains, the same mountains that once seemed to be her backbone and impenetrable, became her downfall. The battle was fierce and bloody. So many died or disappeared. Even to this day, it is not known what happened to them all.
When it appeared that all would be lost, Schöne gave herself for her land and those that loved and protected her. Deep within her foundation, a small item had been immersed into the ground by a man that had been there during her birth. If ever a time came when it appeared that Schöne would be lost, the “gift” would free itself and exact revenge. Upon the last battle, the item manifested and the battle was ended, but Schöne was no more.
But, as with all things when such a change happens in the world, something emerges in its place. The “gift” did not just destroy, but created, not out of nothing, but from the dust and debris of what was once the manor. As well the “gift” deposited throughout the land, magic.
A castle appeared, its back once more covered by the mountains. Before the castle, lay a valley, but not as it was. A river meandered through the valley, small enough in places, yet wide enough that small vessels could penetrate the inner valley. People began to return, to rebuild homes and lives as they had done before. But this time there was a difference, the people found they could use the magic that had saturated the land, slowly at first, but with practiced knowledge they were able to control and use the magic more proficiently.
As time went on, other, stranger occurrences began to encroach on the land. Beasts and flora, that were once only told in hushed whispers or in bedtime stories, emerged from the dreams and into reality.
