Remnants of the tribes were twisted by the release of the magic that spread through the land when Schone was destroyed. Schone Erde Manor was lost and Castle Geist was born but the devastation of the war soaked into the soil itself and corrupted the very essence of the land. These surviving remnants of tribesmen now dwell below ground. They are Marnoks.
What was once above, is now below.
The Marnoks are ruled and organized into a caste system. The caste system is divided into five classes:
1. High Caste – The high caste is made up of the strongest telepaths. Their power and ability is so strong that they are able to control whole legions of Marnoks. It is through this caste that the lower classes are controlled. This caste is allowed to breed with human females.
2. Priest Caste – This is the functioning caste. It is in this caste that the breeding program that has led Marnoks to kidnap humane females was devised. The degree of strength of telepathy in this group is strong and they are used as well to control hunting parties or individual Marnoks when they have been given a duty to carry out. This caste will police and control the castes below them. This caste is also allowed to breed with human females.
3. Warrior Caste – This caste, as are all others below it, is controlled by the two upper classes. Their purposes include to go above ground, capture humane females for breeding and males for eating and the protection that only brute strength can supply. Their intelligence is controlled by the upper castes. They could potentially be incredibly intelligent but because of the caste they are born into their intelligence may be suppressed by the upper class or some of their mental functionality destroyed by one from the Priest caste. They are only allowed to breed with other Marnoks and the only purpose for their breeding is to breed strong males to fill their class. Occasionally if a warrior Murlok is proven themselves worthy and useful they will be given a human female as a reward to hopefully breed a stronger male into his line. This is incredibly rare when this happens and it is always a female that does not possess magic or any talent whatsoever.
4. Domestic Caste – This caste takes care of butchering stock, cleaning cages, bringing food and all various forms of menial labor. They are in no way allowed to ever breed with a human female. If they were to ever attempt it the female that was bred would be killed along with the Marnoks that had bred with the female. This caste is susceptible to bouts of rage and violence. They are controlled by the upper classes but minimally. Their functionality is lower and they aren’t very bright. The issue with this class is that it is violent and ignorant. There is no trace of telepathy in this caste.
5. Slave caste - The slave caste is the lowest functioning caste of all. The lowest caste is the largest and consists of slaves that do all of the menial labor for the other four castes and subservient to all but captives. The purpose of the slave caste is to suit the needs of others. If a higher Murlock is looking to release physically this is where they go. They are easily killed, controlled, and overtaken. This class has no original thought. Like the caste above them because of their lack of mental functioning they are given to bouts of violence and rage. They are unable to control their emotions as they do not have the mental capacity to understand them so they react and react violently. This caste is not allowed to breed with Murlock females or with human females. If it is ever found out that a slave Murlock has bred with another both the female and the male are immediately killed.
**Human females though valued for their ability to breed can be considered beneath even the slave caste.
The Marnoks sole driving needs are to eat and breed.
The lack of breed-able females in colonies propels them to kidnap human females and use them to procreate.
For food they venture to the surface so that they can capture human males that are then used for food.
The Marnoks organize raiding parties and make excursions to the surface so that they can capture males for food and females for breeding.
Human females are critical to the Marnoks. Some of the humans that now inhabit Geist lands have the ability to hold magic, and there is hope among the Marnoks that when they breed with human females they will be able to breed magic into their species.
The Marnok females are incredibly rare, and are often unable to carry to term and if they do, the offspring are frequently feeble and do not survive long. Also, it is incredibly rare for Marnoks to give birth to female offspring. The deficiency of Murlok females has created the additional problem of over breeding their own women as well as many are bred incestuously within their own family circles. This has created the need to bring in outside species.
With human females the Marnoks are trying to breed a hardier species. This need leads to them capturing those who fight first when they are on a raiding excursion. Marnoks believe that fighting females are healthier and more powerful than those that do not fight.
Please note that when roleplaying, any female captured by the Marnoks will be raped. The Marnoks' seed is potent. If you RP that your character has been abducted and taken below, be ready to RP a rape and pregnancy as well. There is no wiggle room on this. If your character is abducted and female and taken below there is only one outcome.
The Marnoks are exceptionally strong and can crush bones with their hands. While fighting they often break bones and do serious damage. The flip side to their incredible brute strength is that they do not wear armor or carry weapons. Clothing is scant and they rely on acting as a pack while fighting and raiding. They are brutal and powerful and this makes them a formidable enemy when encountered while alone or within a party. Because the Murlok warriors are controlled by the upper classes you can expect there to be little to no concern for life. It is not unusual to have the telepath use the warriors like fodder even as they attack as a complete unit.
Marnoks are not found on the surface alone. They always travel in packs. This is because no priest or ruler would dare to go up to the surface alone and any other caste going to the surface without one of the higher classes would be killed without hesitation by their own leaders.
The size and power of the raiding party can be directly linked to the telepath that has accompanied the party. The more powerful the telepath the more underlings they are able to control and the larger the party.
It is also important to note that Marnoks do not attack cities or large settlements. Their hunting/raiding parties are always found deep within the forests attacking travelers and small settlements.
Intelligence in certain individual Marnoks is dependent on their caste.
If the lower castes were not controlled mentally they would deplete the surface population in a matter of months, using them for food.
No human captured and taken below by the Marnoks has ever returned. None on the surface so far have been able to find a way to enter into the Murlok’s domain and return. It is believed that only those with the strongest Earth Talent would be able to successfully enter into the Murlok’s domain and navigate it.
The Murlok’s homes are deep below the earth. They have carved out dwellings into the bedrock deep beneath the surface and soil. How they get down there and above as quickly as they do is a secret known only to them.
